Disappointing
Overall, I found this book a disappointing experience. There were a number of technical errors which gives the book a sloppy feel and may prove confusing to users lacking confidence in their own ability to rationalise code examples. I was also irritated to find a 85-page PEAR and PECL package listing in the back of the book, which appears to just be a reproduction of information from pear.php.net, and something which will probably be out-of-date by the time the book is delivered. I also found it annoying to find a quick start guide to a commercial product sold by one of the authors included in the book. This book is marketed as containing expert techiques, yet the book spends 50 pages going through basic functions! I bought the book on the reputation of the authors, who are all very visibile within the PHP community. I shall not make the same mistake again. In my opinion, buyers would be much better off buying either "Advanced PHP Programming" by George Schlossnagle (0672325616) or "PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, Practice" by Matt Zandstra (1590593804), both of which are excellent.
