Worthwhile, but has mistakes in itI have learned things from this book, but I feel the book lacks
a totally independent peer-review to iron out the mistakes and
the gaps in the flow of information.
I note that one chapter was written by a guest author; I haven't
found which one it was.
Overall, I take an instant dislike to any book that has a
proclamation in it along the lines of "I've shown you X, now
you fully understand it". Who on earth are these authors to
dictate that one glib explanation of theirs means that I understand
a concept or subject? Sigh.
With precious little good information out there, I still think that
this book is worth the money. Any port in a storm, eh.
Good Book, Well Written...Top Marks.
I strongly feel that you guys need an online magazine supplement to this book to enable you provide more examples of the application features.
Something along the lines of the online Oracle Magazine supplements.
Your updates to the book can simply come from a collection of the finer points in the online supplement.
Would recommend it to anyone who's ready to go beyond the basics.
Not for would-be experts either?I don't rate myself an expert, or a beginner - somewhere in between. I've been using APEX for about a year now, but there are still advanced topics I'm itching to get to the bottom of. This book offers tantalising glimpses at some of them, but doesn't really tell me what I really need to go onto the next level.
For example, try looking up "MRU processes" in the index, and it's not even there - something anyone who has created a page to insert or update data will have seen, and perhaps want to know more about. I've long since figured out what these are and what they are and aren't good for - in fact, advanced APEX developers tend not to use these out-of-the-box processes at all, which perhaps explains their absence from this book. However I have to say that, on the whole, I have obtained more relevant from the online APEX forums than from reading this book.
The beginners' books look too basic for me, so I don't think there is a book out there on APEX for me at the moment. I think I'll just stick with the online forums for advice for now.
Not good for lasagne recipesI was disappointed that this book was absolutely no help in helping me to make the perfect Lasagne - but then of course I realised that I should have paid closer attention to its title: 'Pro Oracle Application Express'.
If you are looking for a book to guide you through professional level Oracle Application Express development then this is an excellent resource. If you are looking for a beginners' guide to the same (or indeed tips for the perfect Lasagne) you would be best advised to look elsewhere.
NOT for beginnersBuyers should note that this book is definitely NOT for beginners looking for a step by step guide on how to build applications. Get the beginers guide instead and then get this once you find building APEX apps easy.
My rating is based on my how a bgineer would view this book, though I can tell that it has real insights and valuable lessons for the more experinced APEX developer.
